NAETISL provides initial training and professional development to translators and interpreters in preK-12 education. NAETISL has established a tiered approach to train and identify spoken language interpreters in education.

Orientation to School Interpreting (Tier 1 – Foundational Skills)
Our Orientation to School Interpreting (Tier 1 – Foundational Skills) is a 2-hour workshop designed to highlight the basics of interpreter qualifications, roles and responsibilities, code of ethics and standards, glossary-building strategies, modes of interpreting, and effective ways to collaborate with school teams. Approved for 6 American Translators Association CEPs. Approved for 0.2 IMIA/NBCMI CEUs. Discounts for NAETISL Members.
Interpreting Spoken Languages in Education Settings Intermediate Course (Tier 2)
Our Interpreting Spoken Languages in Education Settings Intermediate Course (Tier 2) is a 10-week course with weekly live sessions with an experienced instructor, language mentors, and guest speakers. Topics covered include language access requirements, code of ethics and roles of the interpreter, consecutive interpreting skill-building, glossary-building activities with terms related to English Learner programs, student support teams and MTSS, overview of special education services, sight translation and note-taking skill-building, and overview of simultaneous interpreting. Accredited by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) for 20 continuing education hours (pending). Discounts for NAETISL Members and organizations enrolling three or more participants.
Interpreting Spoken Languages in Education Settings Advanced Course (Tier 3)
Our Interpreting Spoken Languages in Education Settings Advanced Course (Tier 3) is a 7-week course with weekly live sessions with an experienced instructor, language mentors, and guest speakers. Topics covered include general and special education terminology expansion, interpreter ethical dilemmas and approaches in educational settings, psychoeducational assessments, disability categories and common conditions requiring accommodations, eligibility, IEP, and reevaluation terminology, meeting management and affective presence, simultaneous interpreting for board meetings and student tribunals, crisis, and mental health situations, remote interpreting and technology overview, advanced note-taking strategies, tools to collaborate with the educational team. Accredited by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) for 6 continuing education hours. Discounts for NAETISL Members and organizations enrolling three or more participants.
Translation in Education Settings for Spanish Translators
Our Translation in Education Settings for Spanish Translators is a 20-hour course approved for 10 American Translators Association credits. It is designed for translators who wish to specialize in the field of education. It covers a wide range of topics and skills needed for translating educational materials accurately and effectively. The purpose is to provide educational translators of all languages with sufficient knowledge and skills to translate documents for school settings according to established ethics and standards of practice. Instruction will prepare learners to be able to produce translations that are grammatically correct and pragmatically suitable by reading carefully and employing appropriate linguistic and extralinguistic research procedures. The focus of the training is on building competence in translation while furthering understanding of educational terminology and concepts. Live sessions will provide time for lecture, discussion, and practice.
All of our courses offer practical, and interactive activities that build interpreting and translating skills, knowledge taught by experienced instructors, guest speakers who are experts in their content areas, and mentors who can provide language-specific support.
