About NAETISL
The National Association of Educational Translators and Interpreters of Spoken Languages (NAETISL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2019.
In 2020, NAETISL launched the development of the nation’s only certification program dedicated specifically to spoken language interpreters working in educational settings. This certification provides bilingual and multilingual professionals in early childhood and K–12 environments with the opportunity to demonstrate that they meet established national standards and professional requirements at a defined point in time.
We extend our sincere gratitude to our Subject Matter Experts and Exam Advisory Committee for their expertise and commitment, as we share one vision:
To advance language access and language justice in early childhood and K–12 education by promoting highly qualified, nationally certified educational translators and spoken language interpreters.
Purpose of the National Certification for Educational Interpreters of Spoken Languages
The purpose of the National Certification for Educational Interpreters of Spoken Languages (NCEISL) is to:
- Establish a mechanism to determine whether a candidate for certification in educational interpreting in spoken language has the necessary, basic, entry-level skills and knowledge to function competently according to the nationally vetted standards and ethical practice of the profession.
- Provide those who collaborate with interpreters in education with a standard of quality they can expect from candidates who complete the National Certification for Educational Interpreters of Spoken Languages.
The exam also provides interpreters in education with an assessment of their knowledge and performance for professional development purposes.
